CBD and the Endocannabinoid System.

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

Humans and Dogs respond to CBD and other cannabinoids through the endocannabinoid system . The Endocannabinoid System or ECS, is a network of receptors, internal neurotransmitters (endocannabinoids), and receptor proteins that are found in the central and peripheral nervous systems of mammals. Cannabinoids are made by the body and also produced in plants. Plant cannabinoids, including CBD, trigger the ECS to balance bodily functions like immunity, the central nervous system and others. When your pet's ECS is out of balance, CBD may help to control issues that imbalance is causing.

Marijuana is rich in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and low in cannabidiol (CBD), while hemp is rich in cannabidiol (CBD) and low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

This is important to consider because CBD contains the medicinal properties, while THC is the compound responsible for the “high” feeling in people. Plus, THC is extremely toxic to pets. The CBD oil products intended and formulated for dogs and cats are derived from hemp, meaning they are loaded with cannabidiol and less than 0.3% THC. Never use a Hemp product containing a higher level of THC around a pet. It could be fatal.
